The acid polymer 3-hydroxybutiric and related copolymers are biodegradable plastics that could be produced integrated to a sugarcane mill. Under this scenario, the energy required for the production process comes from cogeneration through bagasse, and wastes are recycled to cane crops. The current low price of sugar and cogeneration from bagasse suggest that these polymers could be produced at a low cost.
